Il 1958 è un anno fortunato per Fernando Botero: nasce sua figlia Lina, le opere esposte a Washington, alla Gres Gallery vengono vendute tutte il giorno stesso dell’inaugurazione, vince il secondo premio al X° Salone degli Artisti colombiani ad a soli 26 anni ottiene la cattedra di pittura all’Accademia d’arte di Bogotà¡.
Dal 1959, Fernando Botero studia Velazquez e, influenzato dall’espressionismo astratto, dipinge più di dieci versioni del “Niao de Vallecas”, utilizzando pennellate incisive e monocromatiche.
Vince un premio Guggenheim e partecipa, alla V Biennale di San Paolo in rappresentanza della sua patria.
Nominato rappresentante della Colombia alla II Biennale del Messico. viene osteggiato ed aspramente criticato.
Per la terza volta, Fernando Botero abbandona il suo paese con pochissimo denaro e si trasferisce a New York.
Il 1960 è un anno di grandi cambiamenti: affitta un loft nel Greenwich Village, nasce il secondo figlio Juan Carlos, ma si trova presto in ristrettezze economiche perché la Gres Gallery, che lo aveva aiutato e sostenuto, chiude.
I rapporti tesi con la moglie lo portano al divorzio.
Con il quadro "La camera degli sposi", che è un entusiasta omaggio al Mantegna, vince finalmente il primo premio al XI Salone degli artisti a Bogotà e l’anno dopo il Museum of Modern Art di New York, acquista "Monna Lisa all’età di dodici anni", anche se la sua prima mostra, alla galleria The Contemporaries, viene aspramente criticata.

Nel 1964 il pittore si risposa con Cecilia Zambrano, intanto il gusto artistico del pubblico si evolve ed il nuovo stile plastico di Fernando Botero, connotato da colori tenui e dalle forme tondeggianti, inizia a piacere.
Nel gennaio del 1966 si tiene la sua prima grande personale europea, a Baden-Baden, in Germania e Fernando Botero, che nel frattempo si è costruito una casa a Lon Island ed ha lo studio sulla 14a Strada a New York, viaggia molto tra Europa e Nord, Sud America facendosi influenzare dall’arte dei grandi pittori come Rubens, Durer, Manet e Bernard.
Nel 1970 nasce a New York il terzo figlio, Pedro e quell’anno apre in Germania una grande mostra itinerante in cinque musei comprendente oltre ottanta opere.
Botero divide la sua vita fra New York, Bogotà e l’Europa, ma nel 1973 si trasferisce a Parigi dove inizia le sue prime sculture.
Ormai Fernando Botero, risposatosi con Sophia Vari, è un artista amatissimo e ricercato, le sue grandi tonde serene sculture fanno bella mostra in parchi, giardini e musei di tutto il mondo.
Le mostre, le retrospettive ed esposizioni dei suoi quadri richiamano un pubblico sempre più vasto.
Il museo Antioquia ha dedicato una sala al figlio Pedro dove vengono esposte sedici opere dipinte da Botero in memoria del figlioletto morto e donate all’istituto.
